Sal Giorgianni, at an early age was playing saxophone professionally. At 18 yrs. old, as a featured soloist with the Ellenville Jazz Ensemble, he performed opposite Dizzy Gillespie at the 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. After receiving a scholarship to The University Of Miami School Of Music, Sal got the rare opportunity to perform with Stan Getz on Miami Beach at The Fountain Bleu. At 20 yrs. old, he performed at the famed Village Vangaurd jazz club in N.Y. with Larry Coryell, Albert Dailey, Buster Williams, and Billy Hart. He later went on to perform and record with other great jazz artists’ such as Miles Davis, George Gruntz, Arturo Sandoval, Les Paul, Elvin Jones, Steve Tyrell, Wayne Newton, Joe Henderson, the Gil Evans Orchestra, Jimmy McGriff, Lou Rawls, Rachelle Ferrell, Bob James, John Scofield, Bob Mintzer, Eddie Daniels, Paquito D’Rivera, the Bobby Watson Big Band, Dave Liebman, and many others. He performed in the ‘Apollo Theater House Band’ in N.Y. for over a year backing up great new talents. His festival appearances in the U.S. and abroad have included Newport, JVC, Ravinia, Montreal, Vancouver, Lugano, Berlin, Hong Kong, Paris, Milan, Glasgow, Corsica, Ljubliana, and numerous others.
One famed performance, along with a record and a film, was that of the 1991 Montreux Jazz Festival featuring Miles Davis with Quincy Jones conducting. This concert went on to be the historical and Grammy award winning record “Miles Davis And Quincy Jones : Live At Montreux”. Sal also, while finishing a 2 1/2 year run with Maynard Ferguson, had the distinct pleasure and honor of playing a Command Performance for the King of Thailand in Bangkok.
Sal’s career has not only included famous jazz artists’, but his diversified sax style has led him to perform with many famous pop artists’ and song writers also, such as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Lenny Kravitz, Peabo Bryson, Regina Belle, Ashford & Simpson, Cindi Lauper, Glenn Jones, Daryl Hall, Sister Sledge, Vesta Williams, Bobby Lyle, Dr. John, Jimmy Webb, The Five Keys, and many others, including a 5 year stint with The Rascals. He has also performed and recorded with famous Latin and World music artists’ such as Glenn Monroig in Puerto Rico and The Gypsy Kings.
Through all of these musical experiences, Sal Giorgianni has crafted his own style of saxophone playing that stands on it’s own. His playing, production and composition as a solo artist can be heard on his cd releases for Windhouse Records entitled “Sal Giorgianni – Sango” , “Sal Giorgianni – Blue ’N’ Boogie”, and “Sal Giorgianni – Angel Eyes”.
