
Gene Lake
Drummer – The Jazzaar Festival Big Band
Lake comes from a musical family and was influenced early on by the Black Artists Group; his father is saxophonist Oliver Lake. He grew up in St. Louis and for a short time in Paris, then moved to New York at age 14, where he attended the High School of Music and Arts. He then studied in Boston at Berklee College of Music, before returning to Brooklyn. In the field of jazz, he performed with Henry Threadgill and his Very Very Circus (1991-1994, heard on Spirit of Nuff…Nuff), Greg Osby, Steve Coleman (1993-1998), Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, the World Saxophone Quartet or Dave Douglas. He also performed with the jazz/rap band Opus Akoben as well as with the Screaming Headless Torsos. Since 2000, he has released two albums under his own name. He is currently (2016) playing with Rudresh Mahanthappa in his reissue of Return of ‘Saturn Returns’.
