Jazzaar Festival 2017 – Press Release

Press Release Jazzaar Festival 2017
While celebrating the 25th anniversary of Jazzaar Festival’s ‘Bandstand Learning with Role Models’ we will be paying tributes to Role Models in the Afro-American music styles. On the one hand, a homage to Dave Brubeck, an icon of cool jazz, and on the other hand, a Jazzaar debut of the Electric Blues era honoring the some of the music legends that had passed on in 2016.
Dave Brubeck’s music is known for the use of unusual tones and the superimposition of contrasting rhythms, meters and keys. The famous compositions of the Dave Brubeck Quartet “Take Five”, in 5/4 time is one among many exquisite pieces to be showcased by the Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra in April 2017.
“A Funky Blues Night” program will be presented by the Swiss Youth Blues Band with versatile applications of the Blues of the 40s to the modern era. A wide repertoire will be covered featuring soloists among professionals and youth players. Songs by Booker T and the Blues Brothers Band will be promised but so will more contemporary Blues and Funk tunes.
As always, a program with a whole lot of newly arranged music awaits the audience. And also as every year, guest artistes and students will come together in restaurant Einstein on April 19 in a jam session. The concerts at the Kultur und Kongresshaus Aarau will follow on Friday 21 April and Saturday 22 April. Once again expect wonderful musicians from near and far to enliven the cultural life in Aarau.

Hommage a Dave Brubeck

April 21, 2017 in KUK Aarau
Hommage a Dave Brubeck is a tribute in honor of one of the foremost American exponents of cool jazz. As a jazz pianist, composer and band leader the late Dave Brubeck was a master in both refined and bombastic styles as he integrated classical influences into his music with ease. He is known to employ unusual time signatures, contrasting rhythms, meters and tonalities in good taste. One of the best remembered pieces played by his quartet is “Take Five”, which is in 5/4 time. However at Jazzaar Festival his music will be arranged and subtly re-interpreted for a jazz orchestra by some of its prolific writers.
Musical director Fritz K Renold (CH) has gathered some good old friends to join him to pay hommage to Dave Brubeck. These are Ryan Quigley (UK) – Ltp, Bobby Watson (US) – as, fl, Marques Young (US/MY) – tb, Jeremy Monteiro (SG) – p, Rudi Engel (DE) – b, and Billy Cobham (PN) – dr. Together with the up and coming Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra they’re all set to conjure up some magical moments for all Brubeck fans as well as Jazz lovers.
