SYJO – Quincy,s Joint

Quincy’s Joint

This generation’s Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra will get the sense of what it’s like to go back to the roots of today’s contemporary music as it surveys the music of Quincy Jones that had its beginnings in Jazz. Fortified in every section with the alumni of Jones orchestras of bygone years it would be as if the youth will be handed a ‘baton’ as they rub shoulders with the masters to carry on that legacy!

Paulette McWilliams (voc), Eric Miyashiro (Ltp), Eddie Henderson (tp), George Robert (as), Marques Young (tb), Adam Rogers (g), Helen Sung (p), Tamir Shmerling (b), Terri Lyne Carrington (dr)

Much of the music is the original Quincy arrangements adapted for this orchestra while the rest is custom arranged by the acclaimed Bob Freedman for the SYJO. Directing the ensemble is Gil Goldstein who will also step up with his accordion occasionally. This opportunity to work on this production promises an enriching experience for the young members of the orchestra.

The youth musicians will get to experience working with Earth, Wind & Fire’s Dennis Montgomery (HB3) who returns to Jazzaar Festival after a spell. Accompanying Dennis would be his prized vocalists from Berklee College of Music – Michael Bradley, Clifton Williams and Torrence Nelson to lend their voices and to coach the youth choir. A veteran in all things Afro-American music is the acclaimed Chico Freeman (ts) returning with Stevie Wonder’s rhythm section member Vernon ‘Ice’ Black (g). Joining the team for the first time is Switzerland’s Andre Zollinger (tp), together with Kool & the Gang’s Dave Jones (b) and Camille Gainer Jones (dr).

For the Swiss Youth R&B ensemble this will be a week of diving into the heart of Rhythm & Blues with the finest musicians cum educators in the genre.
