Selection Criteria - Jazzaar

General requirements of youth musicians at “Jazzaar Festival”

Jazzaar also welcomes musically gifted youth musicians with special needs to participate in our productions.


 
Prerequisites in instrumental abilities for all student participants:

  • A participant must know how to tune his/her instrument!
  • A participant must be able to hear tuning, whether it is flat or sharp to adapt and blend in an ensemble setting!
  • A participant must be able to play a two-octave range on his/her instrument.
  • A participant must be able to play all major and minor scales as well as the seven modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian in all twelve keys in eight notes at a speed of Quarter Note equals 160 beats per minute.
  • A participant is able to read music well enough to perform a new piece of medium difficulty within 48 hours.

Articulation

An instrumental student is able to play showing the difference between straight eighth notes (i.e. Latin) and swing eighth notes.

Phrasing

A student is able to musically express a melodic-rhythmic concept variably using any given sets of notes and rhythms.

Agogic

A student is able to execute all dynamics, and/or expression markings from very soft to very loud.

Rhythm

A student is able to perform phrases in 16th notes accurately to create a funk groove.

Interpretation

Ability in any of the styles of the African American idiom according to a given list is compulsory for the audition of the project according to the selected theme of the year.
 

Prerequisites for specific instrumentalists

All pitched instrument players

  • They are able to play in tune over two octaves on their respective instruments.
  • They must show a proficiency of Moderato playing of scales in Major and Minor (Harmonic) in all twelve keys.

Pianists

  • They are able to read harmonic chord symbols as written on a lead sheet. (Real Books)
  • They are able to play as soloists in any rhythmic styles required of the selected theme of the year.
  • They are able to accompany in the given style.

Guitarists

  • They are able to read harmonic chord symbols as written on a lead sheet. (Real Books)
  • They are able to play as soloists in any rhythmic styles required of the selected theme of the year.
  • They are able to accompany in the given style.
  • They are able to read lines like a horn player.
  • They are able to use distortion, chorus and flanger box units. A volume pedal is a basic necessity!

Bassists

  • They are able to read harmonic chord symbols as written on a lead sheet.
  • They are able to play in any rhythmic styles required of the selected theme of the year. This applies to acoustic and electric bass players.
  • They are able to read lines in bass clef as fluent as horn players on treble clef!

Drummers

  • They are able to play the following Grooves: Jazz Swing, Shuffle, Salsa, Calypso, Bossa Nova, Samba, Bolero, Montuno, Dixieland in two, R&B, Cha-Cha-Cha, Soul, various Rock Styles, Jazz Waltz, All styles of Blues, Reggae, Funk, Ballads with Brushes.
  • Mallets are needed for the performance.
  • They are proficient in playing fills and drum solos.
