HelenRenold Helen Savari Renold was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With her sister Irene, they founded the duo Cenderawasih that was signed to EMI in 1984. At a very early age they began music lessons covering classical piano, popular guitar and operatic vocal training that soon allowed them to arrange and perform their own compositions and cover tunes from any style or genre. Managed by their mother, they enjoyed a steady employment in clubs, lounges and concert halls and got immediate attention by the local media, which consequently lead to a nationwide fame and the attention of TV and radio stations in the country. Their three albums received high acclaim among the Malaysian public spiking sales up to gold records for EMI Malaysia. The Cenderawasih became one of Malaysia’s most popular Pop Duos of the 80’s.
In 1986 the sisters decided to further their education in America to enhance their musical knowledge in the area of production, arranging and composition at the Berklee College of Music. They received full bright scholarships at the college and graduated in 1988. Helen graduated with a Bachelor in Jazz Composition.
While studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston both sisters also thrived on performing in the suburbs’ club circuits in the evenings gaining once again a following of loyal fans. Helen and Irene also appeared on festival stages in the greater Massachussets area. During their Boston days they gained much opportunity to network and collaborate with other musicians of diverse cultural heritages. After graduation the girls armed with degrees and greater experience returned to Malaysia to find a pleasant welcome from the music industry over there. They soon picked up where they left off before their Boston stint and set off to continue a series of engagements in clubs, TV, radio and concert tours regaining themselves the attention from fans and the media.
Although the Cenderawasih had greater plans to establish a private music college in Malaysia, the future had another calling for Helen that when she decided to marry Fritz Renold (Swiss saxophonist) whom she had met at Berklee College of Music in Boston, she did move to Switzerland leaving behind an illustrious career and future plans.
Upon their arrival in Switzerland they founded the company Shanti Music Productions Renold & Co. It is here that they developed the unique concept of Bandstand Learning with Role Models™. The project developed over the years to what is now called ‘Jazzaar Festival‘. In the meantime the family Renold expanded with the birth of Lydia in 1992, Benjamin in 1993 and Sharon in 1996. Their children are musically talented and perform in bands and also with the Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra founded by Shanti Music Productions.
Besides dedicating her time and efforts in raising the children, Helen had also appeared on stage every now and then with many illustrious jazz musicians such as Herb Pomeroy, Adam Nussbaum, Christian Jacob, Mike Richmond, Tommy Campbell, Bobby Watson, Jeff Brillinger, Franco Ambrosetti, Jerry Bergonzi, Buster Williams, Carl Allan, Adi Yeshaya, Shelley Carroll, Chris Albert, Randy Brecker, Steven Bernstein, Willie Murillo, Donny McCaslin, Tommy Smith, Bernd Konrad, Dave Taylor, Miroslav Vitous, Jamshied Sharifi, Vincent Gardner, John LaPorta and many more. Helen co-produced many of the events with the Jazzaar Association, which she presides over since 2008. She had collaborated with her husband in many compositional projects or co-produced events in Thailand, Malaysia and other countries. In 2003 she wrote the narration to a Jazz Suite entitled Euphrates & Tigris Suite. In 2005 the couple recorded their first album together entitled the “CUBE” that features Fritz’ compositions and Helen’s lyrics with an all Star line up. The album received pre-nomination in 7 categories for the Grammy. Helen is often a featured singer for their productions at Jazzaar Festival. She also continues to contribute with compositions and lyrics for the Festival productions besides teaching voice and piano at Shanti-Music private instruction classes.
Next to focusing on music production, Helen also pursued her interest in education while in Switzerland and earned an Exec. Masters in curriculum design. Together with Fritz and their team they are in the midst of developing their online educational system.
